About Us

I have always loved cooking and baking and learned at a young age how happy it makes people feel. In my formative years I stood at the elbow of Agnes, a wonderful woman who baked muffins, squares, and cakes for my paternal Grandmother (Josephine Hart) who had BC’s first natural foods store in Courtenay. Agnes became my mentor from age 4, and even now in my 60’s I pull out her notebook with her handwritten notes.

My two brothers and I were raised on a farm in the Comox Valley and we grew our own food in almost every way. Our cows provided the milk, cream, butter, yogurt, and sometimes cheese. Our gardens provided our fruits and vegetables and our animals provided us with pork, chicken, beef, goose, and duck. Sadly, I grew up disliking much of what I ate. By age 14 I knew food had to taste and feel better than it did (sorry Mom) so I enrolled in an adult French cooking course at our local community college and my life with food took an immediate about face.

I left the Comox Valley at 18 and moved to Victoria where I was hired in an insurance office. This began my journey in the insurance world where I retired from my Vice President position in Sales and Marketing for an insurance company at age 41 and turned my hobby of cake decorating into a business. This allowed me to work from home and raise my two children. Cakeaters Edible Art quickly grew into one of the Lower Mainland’s most popular destination for custom cakes, cookies, and other sweets. Our clients included municipalities and city halls for our gingerbread recreations of buildings found from downtown Vancouver to UBC, movie studios for our ability to work on set, law firms for our client appreciation edible Christmas displays, and regular folk looking for delicious and unique cakes for their families birthdays and other celebrations….especially weddings! My work was well known in the South Asian wedding world for my colourful and distinctive designs.

In the spring of 2018 after my children moved from home I returned to the Cowichan Valley to care for my Mother who has Dementia. Mom (Judith Daniel, nee Malleson) was born and raised in Mill Bay. She returned here in 1999, built a kitchen and sold sourdough breads, muffins, and cookies at the Duncan Market and through various retail outlets. Since arriving I have fixed up and expanded her bakery and Cakeaters Edible Art is now operating in Mill Bay, and making people happy with my cooking and baking!!

I have received countless thank you notes and acknowledgements for the difference my cakes and other delicious and beautiful bits have made to their special occasions. My passion in life has been to create delicious and beautiful looking food and I’m excited to continue it here!
